Mountain Midwifery Center

Most of you are already aware that I am pregnant but if you didn't already know.....Surprise! Brad and I went to an orientation at the Mountain Midwifery Center this morning. I have been checking out different places; mainly hospitals and every time I would ask if they had other options like a birthing center they would always reply "NO! You have to have your baby in the hospital!!!" I have heard several stories of births at hospitals. Some good, some bad but one thing I always seem to pick up on is that you have a designated amount of time to have your baby and if things don't move along at the rate the hospital wants then they will do everything possible to hurry you along. This place is very big into the idea that birth is a normal event, not a "problem to take care of" (That is how they portray the hospital's view.) They said that I can do all of my checkups with them. They offer parenting and birth classes. The one thing I was surprised about was that after you have the baby you get to go home 4 - 6 hours later. That is if you and your baby are both doing well. They also do home visits and checkups after the birth. It sounds like they know what they are doing so I think we are going to give them a shot! My first real appointment will be next week. I'm supposed to be about 12 weeks then so we will get to hear the baby's heart! I'll let you know how it goes!
P.S. If you want to check this place out just click on the title of this blog and it will take you to their website.

  1. Very cool. I would just make sure that they have an emergency plan for you to follow in case for some reason you really do need to go to the hospital. I was worried about being rushed as well when I went in to have Maddy but that turned out to not be a problem. Hearing the baby's heartbeat is really cool. Will Brad get to go with you?

  2. I like the fact they come to your home to do a check up after you go home. I was also glad to know the hospital is close if needed and there is a dr. that works with the birthing center in case of emergency. Can't wait to hear about the heart beat!

  3. Cindy! This is exactly what I did with both of my babies! Freestanding birth center with CNMs! I went to the Austin Area Birthing Center. You will love it!! And, going home so quickly is awesome!! Holly and Estelle, they always have emergency back-up plans! And, since they truly are "with woman" like midwife means, they are going to detect those possible impending issues before they become an emergency. And, being in a cozy, home-like setting without all the craziness of hospitals makes things so much more calm! I'm so proud of you for educating yourself on the options available to you!! As a CNM, I am quite partial to them! :-)

  4. I wish we had a birthing center here, I would totally go for it. Having a baby with no meds at a hospital is a challenge because you have to be a little pushy with the staff. Which was no problem with me for baby # 3, but it would definitely be hard with baby #1. I can't wait to hear all about your expereinces!
